the directory path, the value of this field will be
<Unlimited>. The space available in the directory is
calculated as the difference (in KB) between the space
limitations imposed on the directory and its
subdirectories, and the total amount of space occupied by
files in the directory and its subdirectories. The space
limitation in the path is calculated as the maximum amount
of disk space that is available in the directory and its

KiloBytes that has been specified (using the DSPACE
utility) as the maximum available for this directory,
including the contents of all subdirectories below it. If
there is no disk space limitation for the directory, the
value of this field is <Unlimited>. This is not the
effective space limitation as it does not take into effect
limitations in "the path" (parent directories) which also
affect the disk space available in the directory.

[DIRECTORY] Space Limitation In Path [FIELD]
The Space Limitation in Path is calculated as the maximum
amount of disk space that is available in the directory and
its subdirectories. Maximum available disk space is
affected by limitations assigned to the directory and its
parent directories VIA the NetWare DSPACE utility. This is
also known as the "effective space limitation in the
directory"
For example, suppose a directory restriction was placed on
SYS:HOME of 10 MB. The owner of SYS:HOME\GUEST\DATA might
give that directory a directory restriction of 20 MB. For
SYS:HOME\GUEST\DATA, 20 MB is the space limitation in the
directory, but 10 MB is the Space Limitation in Path, which
is what the effective restriction actually is for the
directory.

The rights for NetWare 286 and NetWare 386 servers are the
same with the following exceptions:
Because NetWare 386 automatically indexes large files
(called Turbo-FAT indexes, for files with 64 or more FAT
entries), the Indexed attribute is used for NetWare 286 but
not NetWare 386.
The Purge attribute is new for NetWare 386. This attribute
is designed to serve as a signal to the NetWare 386
operating system that the file should be automatically
purged upon deletion.
The Copy Inhibit, Delete Inhibit, and Rename Inhibit
attribute are new for NetWare 386.

[FILE] Size (Physical) [FIELD]
The value of this field is the physical size of the file
(in bytes). "Physical size" refers to the number of bytes
of that are consumed by the file on the file server.
Because each file must take up a whole number of blocks on
the file server, the physical size of a file is always a
multiple of the block size of the volume on which the file
resides.
Although block size can vary from volume to volume, within
a given volume the block size is fixed. For NetWare 286
file servers, the block size is always 4 KB; for NetWare
386 file servers, the block size can be 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64
KB. For example, on a volume with a block size of 4 KB, a
file with a logical size of 5 KB would have a physical size
of 8 KB. The smallest file would take up 4 KB of physical
space.

defined through the NetWare SYSCON utility. Unlike the
charge system that NetWare uses for the other services,
disk storage rates define the time of day the rates are
applied and are charged on a blocks in use per day basis.
The system administrator defines up to 20 charge periods
(thirty minute intervals) per week, during which the system
will write the charges accumulated by each user to the
NetWare accounting database. For each period, NetWare
determines the total number of blocks of disk storage each
user has in use, calculates the charge based on the
formula: Disk Space (KB) x Days since last charge period
(including partial days) x the charge rate specified for
the current charge period and writes the result to the

The value of this field is "Yes" if limitation of users'
disk space on the server is enabled. Enabling the
limitation of disk space is a system parameter for NetWare

Note: Enabling the limitation of disk space on NetWare 286
servers results in the server keeping track of users' disk
space utilization on the fly; this means that disk space
utilization reports can be computed virtually instantly and
will drastically cut down on the amount of time it takes to
compute some reports.

[SALVAGEABLE FILE] Size (Physical) [FIELD]
The value of this field is the physical size of the file
(in bytes). "Physical size" refers to the number of bytes
of that are consumed by the file on the file server.
Because each file must take up a whole number of blocks on
the file server, the physical size of a file is always a
multiple of the block size of the volume on which the file
resides.
Although block size can vary from volume to volume, within
a given volume the block size is fixed. For NetWare 286
file servers, the block size is always 4 KB; for NetWare
386 file servers, the block size can be 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64
KB. For example, on a volume with a block size of 4 KB, a
file with a logical size of 5 KB would have a physical size
of 8 KB. The smallest file would take up 4 KB of physical
space.

subdirectories below it. This field requires a full
directory path name (for example SYS:SHARED\DATA) as a
descriptor.
Each file name owned by the user in the specified directory
is listed with the last modification date and time, DOS
file size, and file attributes. Total disk space owned in
the directory is given in logical file size, physical file
size, and slack (difference between logical and physical
file size).
Logical vs. Physical file size: Logical file size is the
size you see when you perform a DOS DIR command; this is
actually how much data is stored in the file. Physical file
size is how much space the file actually takes up on the
hard disk. Files must take up whole disk blocks on the file
server, and the usual block size for NetWare file servers
is 4 KB; this means that the physical file size of every
file is a multiple of 4 KB, and even the smallest file must
take up at least 4 KB of space. On NetWare 386 file
servers, you can specify different block sizes for each
volume.

[USER] Owned Files In Path [CHART]
This chart displays a list of all the files the user is the
owner of in the specified directory, including all of its
subdirectories. This field requires a full directory path
name (for example SYS:SHARED\DATA) as a descriptor.
For each directory that falls under the specified path,
files owned by the user are listed with the name, last
modification date and time, DOS file size, and file
attributes. Total disk space owned in each directory is
given in logical file size, physical file size, and slack
(difference between logical and physical file size). Totals
for all directories within the specified path appear at the
end of the chart.
Logical vs. Physical file size: Logical file size is the
size you see when you perform a DOS DIR command; this is

[USER] Password Exceptions Exist? [FIELD]
This field is a combination of other password analysis
fields. It is available as a convenient summary field for
"bad" passwords. The value of this field is "Yes" or "No".
A "Yes" value will be indicated if the password equals the
user's initials (the first letter of the first three words
in the user's full name), the password is equal to the
user's login ID, the password is contained in the user's
full name, the password does not exist, or if the user's
password exists in the file BVPASS.DAT in the current
directory.
A BVPASS.DAT file containing some common passwords is
created by the BindView NCS installation process; however,
it may (and should) be modified by the user to include site
specific generic, or "unwanted", passwords. The file is an
ASCII text file consisting of a list of words separated by

[USER] Trustee Assignments Combined [CHART]
This chart displays a listing of both Direct Trustee
Assignments and Indirect Trustee Assignments for the user.
Trustee assignments are sorted by directory path. Direct
trustee assignments are directly assigned to the user in
directories or files (files in NetWare 386 only). Indirect
trustee assignments are assignments the user has by virtue
of being security-equivalent to another user or user group.
Being security-equivalent to another user does not mean
that the user has all of the same rights as the
security-equivalent user. The user only inherits direct
rights; the inheritance of trustee rights is not
transitive.
Although it is almost always true, being a member of a user
group does not necessarily mean that a user is security
equivalent to the group. It is possible (though very rare)
to use third-party software or NetWare APIs (application
programmer's interfaces) to make a user a member of a group
without being security-equivalent to the group.
For the purpose of computing indirect trustee assignments
inherited from user groups, BindView NCS looks at the
user's security equivalences and not at the user's group
memberships.

[USER GROUP] File Display [CHART]
This chart displays the contents of the specified file. The
full file name, including the directory path, is a required
descriptor for this field. The path may include the
BindView NCS variables %OBJECT_NAME and %OBJECT_ID. As the
report is processed for each User Group, %OBJECT_NAME will
be replaced by the User Group's name and %OBJECT_ID will be
replaced by the User Groups's object ID (hexadecimal ID).
This chart can be used to display configuration information
for each User Group. For example, you might keep general
information about each User Group in a file containing, for
example, what the User Group is used for and how membership
is determined. You could display this information in a User
Group's Dossier with a descriptor similar to
SYS:COMPANY\LAN\INFO\%OBJECT_NAME.TXT.
The formatting of the output of this chart can be
influenced by the value of two environment variables:
BVTABSIZE and BVNOEMPTY.
